Dinosaur Ryuzaki (ダイナソー竜崎 Dainasō Ryūzaki), known as Rex Raptor in the English anime and video games, is a character in the Yu-Gi-Oh! anime and manga series.

Ryuzaki is the runner-up in the Japanese Duel Monsters tournament. He is good friends with the champion, Insector Haga (Weevil Underwood) and tends to use cards related to dinosaurs (thus his nickname "Dinosaur") due to his love of dinosaurs. In the English anime, he is named after the tyrannosaurus rex and the Raptor, two types of dinosaurs.

Ryuzaki develops as the rival of Katsuya Jonouchi (Joey Wheeler). Ryuzaki is vengeful, arrogant, and tyrannical. Yet, he is confident and plays fairly.

[edit] Story

[edit] Ryuzaki in the manga and the first part of the second series anime

Ryuzaki starts out in the series as the Japanese Runner-up of Duel Monsters. During the Duelist Kingdom storyline, he and the champion, Insector Haga (Weevil Underwood in the English Anime) act like they are the best in the entire tournament.

Ryuzaki first appears in Duelist Kingdom on the ship headed toward the Duelist Kingdom Island. Being Runner-up, he is one of the only two duelists that are allowed a room. However, he is kicked out when Mai Kujaku (Mai Valentine in the English anime) defeats him in a duel. He is constantly berated by the fact Mai has more star chips than him throughout the entire tournament. He finally loses to Jonouchi after Jonouchi's Time Wizard defeats Ryuzaki's mightiest beast, Red-Eyes Black Dragon, which he forfeits to Jonouchi. He didn't reach the finals, but why he was disqualified has never been revealed; he may have lost the rest of his star chips, either to another competitor or to a player killer, or he may have run out of time to collect ten chips in order to reach the finals.

In the Battle City arc, he is seen briefly, losing to Esper Roba (Espa Roba) whose Jinzo crushes his Serpent Night Dragon (It should be pointed out that Roba was cheating during this duel). Ryuzaki then advises Jonouchi on Roba's strength and leaves the tournament afterwards. This is the final appearance of Ryuzaki in the manga.

[edit] Second part of the second series anime

In the second series anime, it is revealed that he and Haga lost a good deal of their popularity after the tournament and they eventually ended up wandering Domino City where they were ambushed by a man wielding the power of Orichalcos. Their souls are taken, and released when Yugi Muto (Yugi Mutou in the English manga) defeated the man.

The two of them then trail after the party until Yugi's soul is taken by Rafael and they beg him to take them on their plane. Rafael and Alister take them to Dartz, who agrees to give them power if they pass the necessary test. Each of them is given a piece of the Orichalcos stone and both must succeed in grasping them, which both of them do. They then improve their decks by taking cards from Dartz's massive collection and Ryuzaki challenges Jonouchi to a rematch. He activates the Seal of Orichalcos to improve his monsters' attack points and with the fast summoning of powerful cards, Ryuzaki quickly gains the advantage. When Jonouchi summons the Red-Eyes Black Dragon, however, Ryuzaki responds by summoning his new best monster, Tyrant Dragon. Ryuzaki ultimately loses, however, sending his soul to Dartz again. He is released at the end of the arc like all the other people whose souls were taken and he and Haga flee the hospital they found themselves in.

Their next plan was to enter the KaibaCorp Grand Championship (KC Grand Prix in the Japanese version.) Where they both impersonated Fortune Salim, a duelist. They were quickly defeated by Zigfried von Schroeder (Siegfried von Schroider in the Japanese version) and sent back to Japan by Kaibacorp.

In the second series anime, their last attempt at revenge was to steal Yugi's Egyptian God Cards from his house, where they grabbed Yugi's bag containing all of his Millennium Items. Yugi tried to stop them but couldn't catch up. Meanwhile they examined their prize, not knowing what they had retrieved. They were then attacked by Dark Bakura, who stole the Millennium Ring back from them.

In the Japanese version of the TV series Ryuzaki is shown in the last episode of Yu-Gi-Oh! dueling with Haga.
