Dinosaur King

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Dinosaur King (known in Japan as Kyoryu King) is a card game from Sega that uses the same gamplay mechanics from Mushiking and uses dinosaurs instead of beetles. The game was revealed in JAMMA 2005 and is already released in both Japanese and English versions.

Sega has even filed Taito for a game called Dino King that uses Sega's patented gameplay from Mushiking.

[edit] Story

Dr. Tyler was on a paleontology session with his son, Max. Rex, Max's best friend, joins along as well. When Max had stumbled across some magic stone slabs with images of dinosaurs, the boys were being called out by the dinosaurs for help. It seems that an evil organization called the "Alpha Gang", led by the nefarious Dr. Z, traveled back in time to hunt down the dinosaurs. It is up to Max and Rex to defeat Dr. Z and the Alpha Gang in hunting down the dinosaurs.

[edit] Gameplay

The gameplay mechanics is very similar of that from Mushiking. It uses the concept of rock-paper-scissors by pressing a button corresponding to the type of skill. Unlike in Mushiking, each type does not correspond to Hitting, Pinching or Throwing but just referred to as Rock, Paper and Scissors. Players scan their cards with the card scanner in the middle of the machine.

The term "Finishing Move" from Mushiking is now known as a "Critical Hit" and Skills are now referred to as "Moves".

Every time a player inserts their credits in the machine, the machine will dispense a random card of either a move or dinosaur card. Rare cards also get dispensed in the machines as well. When the card is retrieved, the player has to decide to play a one-player game or a two-player game. One-player games will pit the player against four computer-controlled dinosaurs, controlled by the Dr. Z and the Alpha Gang. Two-player mode applies the two-out-of-three rule in winning.

In a two-player game, a player cannot use the same dinosaur he/she used in the first round.

The player scans a dinosaur card first, then the player scans one move card to each of the three move type; totalling of four cards to scan. The player may wish not to scan cards when he/she lacks particular cards. When a match begins, a countdown timer will begin counting down to zero while the player decides his/her move. A move icon with sharper edges indicates the Critical Hit. This can cause major damage when the player wins with such move.

However, there is a feature that makes Dinosaur King unique from Mushiking: the use of six different elements. Each element has a color to be distinct from one another and a weakness against the other element to inflict major damage if the dinosaur is weak against such element. The elements are assigned to the dinosaur cards and the Super Move Cards as well.

  • Fire is weak against water
  • Water is weak against lightning
  • Lightning is weak against earth
  • Earth is weak against grass
  • Grass is weak against wind
  • Wind is weak against fire

[edit] Cards

There are different cards to collect and use in order to play Dinosaur King. The barcodes are located on the long edges of the cards for the player to scan them in the machine. So far, there are three types of cards used in this game.

[edit] Dinosaur cards

These cards represent the "character" for the player. This is first scanned when a player scans his/her dinosaur and move. Each dinosaur is unique in the following traits:

  • Basic information (Meaning of name, Length, Period and Located Where; in the back of the card)
  • Critical Hit type
  • Element
  • Technique points
  • Strength Value

[edit] Move cards

These cards represent the fighting techniques of the dinosaurs. They are only scanned once the Dinosaur Card has been scanned. Only one move card per move type can only be scanned, making a total of possible three cards to scan.

[edit] Super Move cards

These cards can teach the dinosaur a special elemental move and can cause massive damage when used. There is only one card per element revealed as of now. More will be revealed over time. The player cannot scan an element card if the element of the dinosaur does not match the element of the Super Move. If he/she scans a "wrong" card, the game will tell the player that he/she scanned the wrong element.
