[edit] When/what?
Digital Bikini/Digital Bra censorship is usually carried out on a completed animated feature that is being prepared for redistribution in a new country/market. Methods used during this process may include any form of visual alteration (excluding deletion of images of frames) to an animated feature for the purpose of obscuring nudity; including the drawing of clothes onto naked/semi naked character (Typically swimsuits or undergarments; hence the terminology used), the placement of unique objects in front of a character in order to conceal their genitals, or the expansion of existing objects/clothes to be less revealing.
Digital Bra/Digital Bikini is distinct from the general process of digital airbrushing in that the former deals exclusively with adding or expanding visible elements to conceal nudity, while the latter may be used for many different purposes (for example, removing trademarks or relabeling alcoholic beverages as soft drinks).
[edit] Why?
Such post production work may be conducted for a number of reasons. Including compliance with local regulations restricting the depiction child nudity, the preparation of a feature for distribution to an age that is younger than was originally intended, or the preparation of a feature for distribution in a region/culture where nudity is less acceptable than the region in which the feature was created.
[edit] Example
The digital bikini/digital bra method is commonly employed by US based groups preparing Japanese animation for distribution on American networks. One of best known instances of this method was during the censorship of Tenchi Muyo for distribution in the US (where FCC regulations prohibit most forms of nudity among under 18s). During which time swimsuits were added to character in multiple scenes in order to conceal characters nudity.
