DiGi Telecommunication is a mobile phone service provider in Malaysia using the dialling codes of "016, 0146, 0143". It is owned in majority by Telenor ASA of Norway and with Berjaya Group as a minority stakeholder. On 24 May 1995 DiGi became the first celco in Malaysia to launch and operate a fully digital cellular network.
They were also the first to offer EDGE (2.75G) in Malaysia in 2005.
In 2005, DiGi held a bid on the 3G spectrum. In 2006, the MCMC (Malaysia Communications & Multimedia Commission) gave the license to other companies (TimeDotCom and MiTV), which were not mobile operators in Malaysia at time of bid. At this point of time, TimeDotCom has not launched their 3G services. MiTV will launch its 3G services under the umbrella of Mi3G brand. Mi3G looks doubtful as MiTV just retrenched 200 employees and the cable TV business is not taking off.
Because of DiGi not winning the 3G license, DiGi decided to bid on a WiMax license in July 2006, together with 13 other providers. The bidding process was then cancelled by government due to certain requirements and specifications were not included by MCMC into the bid papers. DiGi has resubmitted the bid and are now awaiting the results from the government.
As of June 2006, DiGi has the most prepaid (pre-pay) mobile phone customers in Malaysia.
In June 2006, DiGi also launched the first Malaysian branded entertainment TV program, Ejen 016 on TV3 (Malaysia) channel, cementing its reputation as one of Malaysia's most exciting telecommmunications company.
DiGi is listed on the Bursa Malaysia Stock Exchange under the Infrastructure category.
