[edit] Who promotes it...
The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute of the National Insitutes of Health (NIH), which is part of the US Department of Health and Human Services promotes this diet based on research studies conducted under its auspices.
[edit] What it is...
This diet is based on the studies conducted by using three dietary plans and their results. All three plans were not vegetarian, but the DASH diet plan incorporated a lot of fruits and vegetables, low fat or nonfat dairy, and beans and nuts. Not only does the plan emphasize good eating habits, but also suggests healthy alternatives to "junk food" and discourages the consumption of processed foods.
[edit] The Guide Book
"Your Guide to Lowering your Blood Pressure With DASH"
The manual listed as a reference at the end of this article, has details about the nutrition facts about popular food items and their healthy alternatives. The manual also provides samples of meal plans and proportions alongwith their associated nutritional information. The last pages of the manual provides a list of resources and how to obtain them.
There are also commercial books available that provide much more detail about how to implement the DASH diet. Some include other lifestyle changes to promote healthy blood pressure, lower cholesterol and triglycerides, and reaching a healthy weight. The DASH Diet Action Plan is a user-friendly guide to the DASH diet eating plan. It incorporates results of newer DASH research that showed improved results for blood pressure control by lowering intake of starchy foods, and increasing intake of heart healthy fats or lean protein-rich foods.
