Dickie Dare

Dickie Dare was a comic strip created for Associated Press Features by Milton Caniff. It was the first strip he created, and it first appeared on July, 31, 1933.
Dickie, the star of the strip, was an imaginative 12-year old, who dreamed himself into adventures with many characters from history. However, in 1934, Caniff added a new character, Dan Flynn. Dan was a writter and friend of Dickie's father. Dickie travelled with Dan and together had many adventures for the next couple of decades.
Milton, however, left the strip in late 1934 to work on Terry and the Pirates, which followed the same theme of boy hero with two-fisted adult sidekick. Coulton Waugh took over the strip, in the middle of a story, no less.
In 1944, Waugh left the strip to work on another. His wife and assistant, Odin Burvik took over. Fran Matera also worked on it. Waugh would return to it, and work on it until it ended in 1957. During that time Dickie was aged from a 12-year old, to a Navy Cadet.

In 1986, Fantagraphics published the Complete Dickie Dare by Milton Caniff, which reprinted all the Caniff strips, plus Waugh's completion of his final story. ISBN 0930193210
