Dick Urine

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Dick Urine is both a fictional record producer and a psuedonymn associated with transgressive punk rock singer/songwriter/performance artist GG Allin through his friend and independent label owner/producer Peter Yarmouth. Dick Urine was Yarmouth's stage name (which he always hated) and the name was created by GG right before the show at the old RI Auditorium.

The "Dick Urine" name first turned up on early self-released cassettes of material (usually live recordings) Allin had sold in Boston-area stores and through advertisements in such magazines as Trouser Press and Maximum RocknRoll. The cassette albums were usually soundboard or audience recordings recorded on cassette, but Allin, seeking to have a producer's name on the cassette inserts to make them seem professional (or as remotely professional as a low-budget punk rock cassette release should be), came up with the name "Dick Urine" to use on the producer's credit. The phony credit also served to deflect blame for the less-than-perfect sound away from Allin himself.

Around the time of the recording of Allin's second studio album E.M.F., had met and was already discussing business with Black And Blue Records owner/founder Peter Yarmouth. The recordings for the album were produced jointly by Allin and Yarmouth. Recalling the 'Dick Urine' producer credit on Allin's old cassettes, the two colleagues decided to continue the "Produced by Dick Urine" credit on E.M.F.'s cover and label, thus making Dick Urine a collective psuedonymn for GG Allin and Peter Yarmouth to many fans but it was always intended to be Peter's. When Peter began getting recognised in public as Dick Urine he told GG the name had to go and he wanted production credit in his name instead. To that end, they conceived of a back story for 'Mr. Urine' to give him more of a history: Dick Urine's real name would be Richard Yorun. He would be a budding sound engineer that became involved with GG Allin after witnessing an early Jabbers show in 1980, and Allin would be said to have given Yorun the Dick Urine moniker after taking a liking to him.

At the same time Yarmouth was starting to approach the idea of claiming that Black And Blue Records was actually a Swedish label and that he only ran its American office in Smithfield RI. Another factor was the fact that other bands would approach GG or Yarmouth asking to meet Urine. So eventually Allin agreed that it would be best to kill off Dick Urine. They both began telling people who asked for Dick Urine to produce them that he was in Sweden working at the record label's head offices. After a few weeks, the duo decided it was finally the time to 'kill' Dick Urine off, and announced that he had 'died' in a motorcycle accident in Sweden, where he would be buried.

Yarmouth later revived the Dick Urine name to sell an album of recordings that he had recorded and performed on his own and with friends. The album, The Dick Urine Tapes, was credited to Richard Yorun (Urine's 'real name') and initially claimed that GG Allin had played drums on it and wrote the liner notes - an initially believable claim since Allin actually wrote the liner notes credited to him and he did play the drums on The Jabbers' recordings and elsewhere... except for the fact that the drum tracks sounded like what they really were: a drum machine. So, all future advertising for the record started claiming that Allin had played or programmed the drum machine. Neither claim was actually true, but Allin consented to the gag.

For many years Yarmouth denied he was Dick Urine to any one asking but became more open to the truth when promoting The Cedar Street Sluts. The truth slipped out in an interview. Yarmouth begged it be withheld from publishing the truth but he was exposed and the farce came full circle.
