Dick Justice (band)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Dick Justice was a power trio from Champaign, IL. Formed in the early 1990’s on the campus of the University of Illinois, the members of Dick Justice took their name from the University’s Associate Dean of Students, Richard Justice. Original band members were Jim Kamp – guitar/vocals; Galen Gondolfi – drums/vocals and Rob Arrol – bass/vocals. Known for their energetic live shows, Dick Justice captivated audiences throughout the Midwest on headlining tours and opening for such musical luminaries as Yo La Tengo, Pavement, A Flock of Seagulls, Hum, Walt Mink and Busker Soundcheck. The original lineup released one single on the MUD record label in 1993 . . . a “gold” vinyl EP titled “Lasso Your Heart” which included the songs “9 outta 10” and “Part of Your Problem.” The band also appears on a MUD Records CD sampler.

In 1994, the band started recording tracks with Andrew Beddini (engineer and producer for braid, Milo, Sarge, Steakdaddy 6) for a full length release. Arrol left the band in April 1994 before the project was completed (the masters subsequently have been lost and the band, original or otherwise, never released a full length album). Gondolfi and Kamp continued on with a replacement bass player and relocated the band to Chicago, IL. Gondolfi left the band the following year. Kamp continued on as Dick Justice for a short period before disbanding the group. Kamp’s Dick Justice released three singles on Chicago’s Thick Records.

Arrol formed mary me in the fall of 1994 with Roy Ewing and Todd Bell (rhythm section for emo kings “braid”). Partnered with John Yates’ Allied Recordings, mary me appeared on several of Allied releases, including the “Emergency Broadcast” EP; “Need Me Never” EP and “Attack of the Indie Snatchers” CD sampler. Mary me disbanded in 1996. Arrol went on to play in several Champaign “super groups,” including: Belva Plane (w/”Twiggy’s”/”June and the Exit Wound’s” Todd Fletcher; “Little Engine’s” Matt Pearson and “Titanic Love Affair’s” Ken Hartz); Mutual High Life (w/”Titanic Love Affair’s” Ken Hartz and “Cowboy X’s” Alex Moore); and Shotgun Wedding (w/”Moon Seven Times” Brendon Gamble and Lynn Canfield). Arrol was also a founding member of Todd Fletcher’s “June and the Exit Wounds,” along with Peter Pollack and Champaign rock notables Don Gerard (“The Farmboys,” “mine.,” “Moon Seven Times”) and Charlie Dold (“The Farmboys,” “Milo”). Kamp formed several bands following Dick Justice, including: Little Mittens and Team Player. Kamp switched to bass and formed The Snaklab All Tsars in the late 1990’s. Following his tenure in Dick Justice, Gondolfi bounced around the United States. In 2000, he landed in St. Louis, MO and began rehabbing a neglected neighborhood. Gondolfi has been recognized by St. Louis media for his efforts. In 2005, he returned to the throne to play drums for “Airport Elementary”.
