Dick Bavetta is a professional basketball referee for the NBA. As of February 8, 2006, Bavetta had officiated 2,135 NBA games, giving him the record for most games officiated, on top of the record for most consecutive games officiated, as he never missed any games. He wears uniform number 27.

Bavetta was first hired by the league in 1975. While being interviewed by ESPN about his achievement, Bavetta told the reporter the secret to his longevity was "wearing five pairs of socks," which he claims helped keep his feet in good shape. [1]

Bavetta is known as one of the best officials in the NBA. Where many referees try to take over the game, Bavetta lets the players play during big game moments, and does not intervene unless there is a severe violation. He is sometimes criticised for making make up calls, but it also makes him more popular among players, since it shows he admits to his mistakes, rather than the more stubborn officials of the NBA.
