The following is a list of words and phrases from the films and American TV show Blade.

Contents

[edit] Asher

Ashers are people who deliberately inhale vampire ash. Vampire ash, when inhaled by a human, gives that human the abilities of vampires for a few hours. It also gives them the vampire thirst for blood, which many ashers satisfy by chewing off their own fingers.

[edit] Ashing

Ashing is the act of killing a vampire. The vampires in the Blade universe can be killed by garlic, sunlight/UV radiation, a silver stake or blade through the heart or head, or beheading. When killed, the vampire's body instantly combusts at an extremely high temperature, leaving a pile of ash.

[edit] Bad Blood

Originaly a Detroit street gang, the term "Bad Blood" is the name for a vampire that has been turned by Blade or any other vampire undesirable. They are not welcome in any house because they represent a contamination in the Vampire bloodline. How Blade is able to turn anybody into a regular vampire is an as of yet unanswered question.

[edit] Conclave

A vampire conclave is a rare meeting of pureblood vampires. Conclave is usually held during a time of great suffering or stress. The House of Cththon held a conclave after the death of the pureblood Charlotte, their first conclave since the bombing of Nagasaki during World War II. Turned blood vampires are not usually permitted in the audience chamber while purebloods are meeting, although the turned blood vampires are responsible for all conclave preparations.

[edit] Daywalker

A daywalker is a vampire that is immune to sunlight. According to Abraham Whistler, daywalkers are created when a pregnant woman who has been bitten delivers the child before she herself is turned into a vampire. Depending on the severity of the bite and the woman, there is a very small window for this to happen, so daywalkers are rare. Blade is the only daywalker mentioned in the series or movies. Blade is also immune to silver and garlic, but still bears the vampire thirst. He also ages as a human. Whether or not all daywalkers share these immunities has not been revealed.

[edit] Familiar

A familiar is a human pledged to the service of a vampire. Familiars do the bidding of vampires in exchange for the promise of being turned into vampires later on. Familiars are usually tattooed with a glyph that represents the House or vampire they are pledged to. These tattoos are generally found on the inside of the wrist or the neck. In all three movies and the TV series, only one familiar has been shown being turned. Detective Brian Boone was turned by Krista Starr as her first kill as a vampire. Boone was intended to be killed as a doublecross, but Krista failed to drain his blood completely and he survived the bite, turning. Most familiars are shown as "wannabes" that never receive their promised rewards.

[edit] Glyph

A glyph is a tattoo or mark that identifies different vampires or their Houses. Glyphs are tattooed onto familiars to identify them to others, and to signify that the particular human is under the protection of a vampire or house. Glyphs are also used to identify safe houses and clubs where a particular House of vampires congregate. These glyphs used to be visible to humans. After Blade began to kill vampires, the glyphs were changed to be visible only by a vampire. Each of the 12 Houses has its own identifying glyph, and independent or "rogue" vampires also use unique glyphs.

[edit] Pureblood

A pureblood is a vampire who was born a vampire, and not just turned. The pureblood vampires rule the 12 Houses of the vampire nation. Purebloods are rumored to be the direct descendants of Drake (Dracula), the first born vampire. How purebloods reproduce or with whom hasn't been revealed on the show, although it is made clear that relationships between purebloods and turned-bloods are frowned upon and may even be forbidden.

[edit] Serum

The serum is a chemical mix that Blade injects himself with as a substitute for drinking human blood. The serum was originally developed by Abraham Whistler, but Blade's body began gaining a tolerance to it. Dr. Karen Jensen, a hematologist whom Blade had saved from a vampire attack, helped create a newer serum that Blade takes twice a day. What the serum is made of has not been revealed.

[edit] Thirst

The vampire thirst is what drives every single vampire. Vampire blood cannot sustain hemoglobin, so in order to survive vampires must constantly drink fresh blood. The thirst gets more powerful the longer a vampire goes without fresh blood. The thirst can lead to "blood lust", where a vampire would kill anyone to satisfy the need for blood. Blade controls his thirst by taking in the serum. Other vampires, such as the House of Leichen, have sworn off killing humans and drink only cloned blood (this is similar to the rules of the Covens in Underworld, where vampires are forbidden to drink blood from a living human; however, the reasons for this are entirely different).

[edit] Turned Blood

A turned blood, or "infected" vampire, is a vampire who used to be human. Humans are turned into vampires by being bitten or by being injected with vampire blood. When a human is bitten, they die and then rise again unless the vampire biting them drains them completely. Turned bloods are one step above familiars on the vampire food chain, but hold no real power in the Houses. No turned blood has ever led a house with the exception of Deacon Frost, who took over the House of Erebus after killing their leader. Turn bloods are considered servants to the purebloods. There are some genetic differences between pureblood and turned blood vampires, as evidenced by Marcus Van Sciver's ability to create a virus that killed only pureblood vampires.

[edit] UV Glaive

A UV glaive is a weapon used by Blade to kill vampires. It is a throwing knife with two curved points, in the center is a UV emitting device that activates when the glaive strikes a target. Blade used a UV glaive to kill the pureblood Charlotte.
