Diana Burnwood

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Diana Burnwood is a fictional character in the Hitman series of video games. She is the controller of the main character, Agent 47. Diana gives 47 his assignments, briefs him on his missions, and occasionally serves as his guide over the radio. For the vast majority of the series 47 never sees Diana, recognising her only by voice. However they come face to face near the end of Hitman: Blood Money, and she sat behind him on the plane at the final clipscene of Hitman:Contracts. She displays a cordial, business-like manner and a posh British accent. She is also a resourceful and highly useful member of the Agency; single handedly saving 47's life, saving the Agency from liquidation, formulating a plan to slaughter the men behind The Francise and dodging death herself several times (she and 47 were the only original members of Agency to survive Hitman: Blood Money). Diana is a major character in Hitman: Blood Money, appearing in many cutscenes, although her face is shown only briefly in a window.

[edit] 47's Greatest Ally

Diana is played throughout the series by the actress and voice-over artist Vivienne McKee

Throughout the series, Diana has shared an odd sort of camaraderie with Agent 47; she appears to be the only human being in the world that he trusts, and is the only one he interacts with on a regular basis (save for some instances with fellow Agent Smith). Yet they are not friends, as the majority of their dialogue is restricted mainly to business matters, and they are specifically forbidden from meeting in person. In practicality, Diana serves as 47's personal aide, whose relationship with him consists only of handling his financial affairs.

Despite the air of professionalism that divides them, Diana seems to nurture some compassion for 47, as seen in their dialogue at the end of Hitman: Contracts, during Blood Money's "A Dance With The Devil" - both during the last parts of the briefing and the cutscene, and during the "Requiem" cutscenes (the kiss should be particularly noted, as several interpretations can be derived from this, besides being a means to administer the heart-poison antidote). She appears very concerned for his survival, more than she should for a fellow employee, and has shown that she is willing to risk her life in order to save his, even if it means betraying his trust.

Though it is not the focus of the plot, Hitman: Blood Money seems to explore this relationship much more than any of the previous games, as circumstances have put the two together in a most difficult time. It would appear that this partnership will become a major element in the coming games, as the events in Blood Money have shown how much they have relied on each other.

As of Blood Money, Diana is the sole survivor of the "Agency Massacre" besides 47 and Smith.

[edit] Diana's Position

As of date, Diana's official position within the Agency is unknown. And while she has access to all or most of the Agency's funds (splitting the last of its monetary supplies with 47), the question still remains as to whether she is the founder of the ICA, or merely a high-ranked employee. If she is the latter, she is also apparently a highly trusted source within the ICA, having been one of the first to know about the existence of an Agency mole. (Presumably the one responsible for the deaths of the other ICA field operatives, who serve under Diana and the other Controllers). Diana has proven herself time and time again to be extremely resourceful, having single-handedly re-opened the Agency and putting all of its resources online again. Whether or not 47 was on one of Diana's assignments at the end of Blood Money remains to be seen. (Diana's having lost contact with him may have been the result of human error, or distrust after she deceived him in order to save his life.)
