Diamond Star DA40
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Diamond Star DA40, or DA40-180 is a four-place single-engine composite airplane made by Diamond Aircraft Industries, notable as a popular modern training aircraft. It is powered by a 180hp Lycoming IO-360-M1A engine, has a maximum takeoff weight of 2,535 lbs, and is rated to travel 147 ktas burning 9.2 gallons of Avgas per hour. A European version known as the DA40-TDI uses a Thielert diesel engine and burns jet fuel.
The DA40 is made both with traditional avionics, as well as with the Garmin G1000 glass cockpit suite.
It is available both with a constant-speed propeller, as well as in a fixed-pitch propeller version (DA40-FP) suited for flight schools. Recently, an improved version of the DA40 was announced by Diamond known as the DA40 XL which boasts a 158 knot top speed and which is noted by rising 'winglet' wingtips which point straight up instead of horizontally. The DA40 XL uses the same engine as the original DA40.
