Diamond Jubilee Higher Secondary School

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Diamond Jubilee Higher Secondary School (DJHSS) is a boys-only secondary school in Gobichettipalayam, in the Erode District of Tamil Nadu, India. It was established to commemorate the Diamond Jubilee celebrations of Queen Victoria in 1898. The school has served the educational needs of Gobichettipalayam and nearby villages for more than a century. The school is restricted to boys.

DJHSS serves the educational requirements of the needy by offering education for a nominal fee.[citation needed] The educational quality, in general, is good and the school has produced a rich set of accomplished alumni who are contributing to various domains.[citation needed] In 2004, a DJHSS student finished joint-top in the Erode District in the Secondary School Leaving Certificate examination, with 490 marks out of 500.[1] Many students have had the rich experience of being taught by a core group of dedicated teachers who played a part in shaping up their lives. Many folks though, have observed a decline in educational quality over the years.[citation needed]

The school is a blend of crowded classrooms and vast open play grounds reflecting good initial planning and subsequent neglect.[citation needed] DJHSS places an emphasis on discipline (caning is a much-followed method of instilling discipline) and as with most schools in India, the teachers do not like to be questioned by the students.[citation needed] Lest it be thought of as "old-school", DJHSS does accept technology well and does so early. Case in point: students of the school had access to computers as early as the mid eighties.[citation needed] The school attempts to provide a well-rounded education to students by allocating liberal time and resources for arts, crafts and games, an aspect sorely lacking in many Indian schools.[citation needed]

As with any good school that is affordable to the poor, DJHSS can safely claim to have helped shape up the lives of many students and to have brought many families out of poverty.[citation needed]
