[edit] Clans
Dhangars are Kshatriyas. Kshatriyas have three major castes (or ethnic groups) - the Marathas, the Rajputs and Dhangars. The Rajputs are Indo-Scythians and had mainly had their kingdoms in North India, the Marathas are Indo-Aryan and had an empire which spread all over central and North India and the Dhangars are mountain kings, who were the brave sardars of the Maratha Empire, and controlled a kingdom after the collapse of the empire. Rajputs have 36 Clans, Marathas have 96 Clans and Dhangars have 32 Clans. A caste is generally divided into exogamous groups based on the same gotras (गोत्र), and defined by the mutual interaction among its members. The two most common of these relationships are:
- "Roti" (bread): dining together.
- "Beti" (daughter): intermarrying together.
The widespread Palaeolithic mtDNA haplogroups in Dhangar clans highlight their Proto-Asian ancestries. Dhangar heterogeneity is ascribable to predominantly South-Asian males and West-Eurasian females.
The following list of clans is limited to few surnames of all sub-castes from Maharashtra.
