Devil in a Blue Dress is a 1990 hardboiled mystery novel by Walter Mosley, the first of his mystery novels featuring Easy Rawlins, a black detective in post-World War II Southern California. The novel addresses issues of race and gender, as well as the post-war condition of black Americans. The plot follows Rawlins as he has been hired to find a woman who is involved in a brewing political scandal. The book was adapted into a film in 1995, starring Denzel Washington as Easy Rawlins, and also featuring Jennifer Beals, Tom Sizemore, Maury Chaykin and Don Cheadle as the unhinged "Mouse". The movie earned nearly $16 million at the box office.
