Devil's Duo
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Devil's Duo was a tag team in Angelo Poffo's ICW promotion, comprised of Jeff Sword and Doug Vines. They held the ICW U.S. Tag Team Titles from April 25, 1981, to June 15, 1981.
The team was managed by Izzy Slapowitz, who accompanied them to the ring holding a book and muttering supposedly occult phrases. These theatrical hints of mock-Satanism helped to put the team over with the fans but also limited their exposure, as many other territories at that time were too 'Bible Belt' for any Satanism gimmick to be used. Following the demise of ICW, they competed in various Tennessee-area independent promotions for the next few years.
Later, in 1991, Sword and Vines wrestled as 'The Barroom Brawlers' in the USWA promotion (with Vines as 'Crowbar' and Sword as 'Bonecrusher'), feuding with the Robert Fuller/Jeff Jarrett team and beating them on two separate occasions to win the USWA World Tag Team title, once in July 1991 and again in September that same year. Sword and Vines also wrestled in USWA under masks as 'The Texas Outlaws'.
Sword and Vines were used by WCW in the early 1990s as enhancement talent, both individually and as a team. Sword retired at the end of 1991 due to injury. Vines still wrestles independent promotions in Kentucky.
The original Devil's Duo was Angelo Poffo and Chris Markoff, and the original Texas Outlaws were Dusty Rhodes and Dick Murdoch.
