Deutsche Oper am Rhein

Deutsche Oper am Rhein (The German Opera of the Rhine) is an opera company based in Düsseldorf and Duisburg. It is one of the leading opera companies in Germany.

After the 1875 construction of what became the Düsseldorf Opernhaus, a strong connection between the two cities’ opera houses existed from 1887 to 1920, and was not re-established until 1955 with the creation of the Deutsche Oper am Rhein.

Theater Duisburg

The company performs in the Opernhaus Düsseldorf (which was built in 1875, partially destroyed in World War II, and reconstructed to officially re-open in 1956) and the Theater Duisburg, (which was built in 1912, totally destroyed in war, and rebuilt in 1950.

The current general musical director is Tobias Richter; the chief conductor is John Fiore.

From April 2006, a nine-month reorganization of the Düsseldorf opera house is taking place. Therefore, until February 2007, most major productions will take place in Duisburg while a smaller facility, the Rhine opera Mobil, which has 804 seats, will present a limited repertory in Düsseldorf.
