Detling
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Detling is a village and civil parish in the Maidstone District of Kent, England. The parish is located on the slope of the North Downs, north-east of the town, and on the Pilgrims Way .
The village, four miles (6.4km) from the town, is bypassed by the A249 road out of Maidstone, although at one time all traffic passed through it. The Cock Horse Inn was used to stable additional horses when required to take heavily-laden coaches and wagons up the steep hill.
The village church is dedicated to St Martin of Tours.
The disused airfield at the top of the hill was an RAF station during the second world war. It was bombed by the Luftwaffe several times, with considerable loss of life. It is now used as a show ground.
