Detective Matthews first appears in Saw II. At the beginning of the movie, he goes to pick up his son Daniel from a police office (he was arrested for stealing). On the way back, they begin to argue and Daniel runs off. Eric later receives a call from Detective Kerry telling him to come to a crime scence. When he arrives, he is asked to identify Michael's corpse lying in front of him. Kerry points out a message on the ceiling, which reads "Look closer, Detective Matthews". While thinking it over, remembering the device that was on Michael's head, he notices that the lock holding it together was from an abandoned Wilson Steel warehouse.

The SWAT team, along with Matthews, reach Jigsaw's hideout and are about to take him into custody when Jigsaw tells Eric that he would have to remain where he was in order for him to deal with his problem. Jigsaw then directs Matthews to a room filled with monitors that show eight captives in the Nerve Gas House, one being his son. Jigsaw tells Matthews that if he talks to him long enough he will see his son in a safe and secure place. After being unable to cope and keep his calm, Matthews becomes impatient, brutalizing Jigsaw until the old man agrees to take him to the house.

When Matthews arrives at the house, he looks around and enters the bathroom where the majority of events in the first film took place; the corpses of Adam and Zepp (as well as Dr. Gordon's severed foot) are still present. After seeing a hand resting on the bathtub, Matthews investigates it only to be attacked by Amanda, wearing Jigsaw's signature pig mask. She jabs a syringe into his leg, knocking him out.

When Matthews wakes up, he finds that he has been shackled to a pipe in the bathroom, and a tape player is next to him. He plays the tape and hears Amanda's voice telling him what happenend and how she became Jigsaw's apprentice, also explaining that he planted evidence on her, as well as others, to get them arrested. Amanda then appears in the doorway and says "Game over" (just as Jigsaw had done in the first movie to Adam), leaving Matthews to rot in the bathroom.

Detective Eric Matthews appears in Saw III at the beginning of the film in the bathroom where Saw II left off. He tries to reach a gun and flashlight but both are out of reach. He uses his shoe to reach the flashlight, and the gun. However, he finds that the clip is empty. He then looks around and sees a hacksaw which he uses to try and cut through his chain, but this proves to be usless. He then notices Dr. Gordon's severed foot and realizes that in order to use the hacksaw to escape, he would have to cut off his foot. After considering the same thing, he instead uses the lid from the toilet to bash his ankle repeatedly in order to expose the bone. Once he had accomplished this, he forced himself to snap his ankle, enabling him to slip through the shackle.

Matthews then managed to get the door of the bathroom open, and followed Amanda down the hallway. Hobbling along on his one good foot, he attacks her, grabbing her by the hair, and smashing her face into the wall. While Amanda is bleeding profusely, he repeatedly screaming "Where's my son?!". Amanda refuses to divulge this information, instead escaping the detective by kicking him in his broken foot. Amanda leaves him behind, and as his anger takes hold, Eric taunts her, shouting "You're not Jigsaw, bitch!" at her from down the hallway.

It is unclear whether Detective Matthews escaped or not. Amanda mentioned that she had "returned the favor" to Matthews, possibly referring to the fact that she had killed him. Jigsaw responded that she had only merely left him for dead, and he 'cleaned up her mess'. What he meant by this is unknown.
