Design of a Decade: 1986/1996 was the first greatest hits compilation released by pop/R&B singer Janet Jackson. It sold relatively poorly for Jackson's post-Control standards, probably because of the exclusion of many singles from janet.

[edit] Album Release and Licensing Difficulties
Released in 1995, it features six of Jackson's hits from Control, seven songs from Rhythm Nation 1814, one song from janet., and two new tracks including the top 5 hit, "Runaway" and the mid-tempo ballad "Twenty Foreplay". A video compilation, featuring all the songs on the album (with the exception of "Twenty Foreplay"), was released concurrently with the album. Owing to licensing difficulties, several later singles that were big hits – including "If", "Again", "Any Time, Any Place", "Because of Love", and "You Want This" – were omitted from the tracklisting. Other singles that failed to make the cut included the UK single "Funny How Time Flies (When You're Having Fun)" (from 1986's Control album), although there was more an emphasis on quality rather than quantity. On the international release of the CD, some songs are shortened in order to include "Whoops Now" and "The Best Things in Life Are Free".
