Desi metal

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Desi metal is a subgenre of heavy metal with thick, heavy, guitar-and-drums-centered sound featuring local languages in lyrics and themes. Traditional instruments such as tabla and sitar may be used to enrich the music.

In the 1990s many bands from the Indian subcontinent tried to mix metal with classical music. The genre itself survives but due to the popularity of pop and disco music in the region it lost its charm. The best qualified song under 'Desi metal' still remains to be "Desi" by Black Warrant.

"Desi metal" sometimes also refers to "Urdu metal", which has the same characteristics but the lyrics and themes are used from Urdu culture.
