Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial is a Group 2 flat horse race in the Republic of Ireland for three-year-old thoroughbreds run over a distance of 1 mile 2 furlongs (2,012 metres) at Leopardstown Racecourse in May.

It was first run in 1971 and was known until 1983 as the Nijinsky Stakes, named after the Irish-trained racehorse Nijinsky II, winner of the English Triple Crown in 1970.

In recent years the race has become a leading Derby Trial, and has been won by several subsequent winners of the Epsom Derby and Irish Derby.
