Miscellany for deletion This page was nominated for deletion on December 7, 2006. The result of the discussion was Speedy Keep.

Perhaps a place in the "Wikitainment" section for the following two pages might be found:

IMHO they're both very funny. Paul August 23:12, Oct 28, 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Archived sandox link

Under the 'Humor' section, the link to a sandbox edit, titled 'This version is amusing' does not appear to be working.

Clicking it gives me the error:

"The database did not find the text of a page that it should have found, named "Wikipedia:Sandbox,oldid=7310538"." Hazzamon 10:52, Nov 25, 2004 (UTC)

I've also encountered said error. - RoyBoy [] 06:13, 6 Jan 2005 (UTC)
Aha! Me too. The link as it currently appears goes to

[http://en.wikipedia.org/w/wiki.phtml?title=Wikipedia:Sandbox&oldid=7310538 ] Anyone know where the amusing old Sandbox page is archived? -- PaulHammond 00:08, 7 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Probably that version got deleted. Since the sandbox gets modified very frequently, the no. of entries in its history become "unmanageably large" so developers manually hack the database to remove some of the oldest versions not yet removed. At least this has been done once, so I assume it is still continued. HTH -- Paddu 21:55, 9 Jan 2005 (UTC)

[edit] 6 Degrees of Separation

Hey, I have an idea about the 6 degrees of seperation. Instead of following links just seeing where ever we end up. I propose that a start page be chosen at random and then a goal page be selected at random again and see how long it takes to get from the start to the goal by folowing links in the manner described of say every 5th link. The start and the goal pages could be announced and then when someone is tired of following the links the last page that they were on could then be announced for someone else to pick up on and follow. I think it would be a cool idea! Jaberwocky6669 09:29, Dec 13, 2004 (UTC)

I agree. Want to organize it? Feel free to set up a page, pick the links, and annouce it on the Dept. of Fun. I look forward to playing it. JesseW 17:35, 13 Dec 2004 (UTC)

[edit] User:Ardonik/I ate my cat

Should User:Ardonik/I ate my cat get a mention here? -- Paddu 21:57, 9 Jan 2005 (UTC)

User:Theresa knott/Those who disagree with Angela must not sign their comments too, at least for the sake of the options for the vote on Appendix B at the end. ROTF typing this comment. -- Paddu 22:10, 9 Jan 2005 (UTC)
What I meant was that I want these links to be added to the page:
Now I've found another page that should be mentioned IMHO:
I don't want something from the page to be removed. -- Paddu 20:15, 28 Jan 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Idea: Votes for inclusion

Well, I just came up with this fun idea. It's like a competition on article writing. There is a page, where people add random tasks like "create an article that links both to Bart Simpson and Exploding whale" or "create an article that contains a phrase "jumping off the bridge is bad for your health"". Articles should be created as subpages or sections of VfI. Then the fun part begins: people vote for inclusion of these articles in the main namespace! If one manages to create such article, he is considered a winner. Grue 11:59, 26 Mar 2005 (UTC)

I think this sounds like a fun idea. I'm not sure how many of these articles would actually get onto main namespace, but they would certainly be humourus. I don't see why we shouldn't try it out. If it fails, then oh well. The only thing that it is lacking is a catchy name. Something like "Random Task Article" would probably be good. I support this for inclusion. DannyQuack 23:42, 4 November 2006 (UTC)

Sounds pretty fun, but there would be violations of WP:NOTE. bibliomaniac15 Review? 01:05, 5 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Movement to unshift "|"

I was wondering if there would be any interest in starting a movement to replace the "\" key with an unshifted "|" key? And someone please don't say, "Set it as a macro," because where's the fun in that? -- addesso 22:49, 29 Apr 2005 (UTC)

I envision this turning into something like a "C programmers vs. sh programmers" holy war. Nickptar 05:46, 2 May 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Wikifiction ?

I was thinking about starting a page labled WikipediaFiction:Deletionist-Inclusionist War, creating an alternate history fiction about a battle that occoured between the two viewpoints of wikipedians. This would make a new category for search and such, WikiFiction or WikipediaFiction. I would have went ahead with it, but I am a little shy since I am a new member. If someone else starts off or says its a good idea, i'd like to try it. The idea would be to illustrate actual historical events of wikipedia that lead to the formation of such groups as the Association of Apathetic Wikipedians, the Association of Deletionist Wikipedians , the Association of Inclusionist Wikipedians, or the Association of Wikipedians Who Dislike Making Broad Judgements About the Worthiness of a General Category of Article, and Who Are In Favor of the Deletion of Some Particularly Bad Articles, but That Doesn't Mean They are Deletionist

Any ideas? -scnd

I've decided to take this challege on the road. There are not so many links now (well, I mean there are, but not sooo many) - but there will surely be after the next database dump! BD2412 T 20:03, 12 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] New Idea

WikiHunt

[edit] Concept

On various pages around the wiki, a tag is put reading something like:
<!-- Congradulations! You have found a secret Wikihunt page worth 10 Points. Sign your name after this message to recieve points -->

In addition, there will be trails of clues that people will need to find in order. These will look something like:
<!-- You have found Part 3 of Wikihunt Trail A. IF YOU HAVE FOUND PART 2, sign your name after this message. IF YOU HAVE NOT FOUND PART 2 YET, YOUR SIG WILL NOT COUNT!

Those who find the final clue will get 100 points.

So...how does it sound? -AtionSong 14:15, 29 January 2006 (UTC)

I strongly object the idea of vandalizing Wikipedia pages in this way. -- Ravn 17:37, 29 January 2006 (UTC)
This isn't vandalizing since the messages are put into the html comment thing and won't show up...but you have to be clear to players that they sign their name inside the comment tag. If they sign outside, well, that would be unintentional vandalism. But I like the idea, except there is the problem of anons and unawares going wtf? --Osbus 00:27, 26 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Idea.

I would like to see a game similar to this or this. They're Choose Your Own Adventure style games, using the wiki software. Since Wikipedia has a signifigantly larger userbase than Uncyclopedia, I imagine this would grow and get much longer than those versions. Anyone like the idea? I'll start it if enough people are interested. --Nintendorulez (talk) 22:32, 9 November 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Song Survey

I just wanted to let you guys know that I'm conducting a Classic Rock survey for the most liked classic rock song on my user page and was thinking that maybe it would be considered as a part of the DOF so tell me what you guys think on my talk page. Right now I'm only accepting songs that I feel are considered to be classic rock, however if the DOF has a problem with it being only for one specific genre, I'll change it to all songs in English. The only thing I won't do is start off the survey new. Hey...classic rock is the superior genre anyway. RENTAFOR LET? 00:40, 10 May 2006 (UTC)

We could start on making some. --Gray Porpoise 15:19, 19 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Wikiquiz?

Hi-been pointed here from the Reference Desk.I had an idea for a 'general knowledge quiz' on perhaps a weekly or fortnightly basis with maybe 50 or 100 questions. As these would be taken from a wide range of topics within Wikipedia(maybe including a special section with questions based on that week's featured articles/pictures),it should encourage Wikipedians to go exploring through a wide variety of articles to find the answers.

Perhaps there can be some sort of reward for the winner-maybe a small box with This Week's Winner displayed and some sort of small prize.

I would be more than happy to organize questions, receive and mark answers etc. So-is this feasible? Is it a good idea?Any suggestions as to how to improve this? Lemon martini 10:54, 27 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Funniest Edit Summaries???

I just had such a good laugh-out-loud burst of laughter, over one of my own edit summaries that took a sudden turn into humor, that I got to thinking, "There should be some sort of award for really funny edit summaries."

As near as I can determine, there is no such award. But at the very least, there really ought to be a place where people can post their funny edit summaries for everyone to enjoy. (Well, probably not everyone, but a handful, at any rate... ) Of course, this assumes that I am not alone in the universe, and that other people also write funny edit summaries on occasion.

On the other hand, it may be that this suggestion will be construed as encouraging a sort of vandalism, whereby individuals who are lacking in scruples might seek out bits of text to edit purely for the purpose of appending a humorous edit summary. (Then again, considering how few people even bother to supply a useful edit summary, perhaps that's not too great a risk!)

On the off chance that I've whetted your appetite for humorous edit summaries, I feel obligated to share the one that inspired this possibly half-baked idea in the first place. It began when I read the half-dozen entries in the "Trivia" section of the Dr. Seuss article. The final item read as follows:

* All of the trees and bushes in his books look very similar to the strange trees and shrubs that grow in La Jolla, California where he lived.

It was written so matter-of-factly that it almost seemed plausible. But having walked enough streets in La Jolla to know better, I realized that I was duty bound to delete this brazenly absurd claim... even if it did fit in rather nicely with the (inherently humorous) contents of the article. Naturally, my edit summary couldn't help but reflect the undercurrent of playfulness that occasioned my edit:

Revert - very amusing, but alas, for all its endearing charm, [and here I paused] La Jolla's shrubbery just ain't rubbery!

Cgingold 14:26, 25 October 2006 (UTC)

Okay, I swear on a stack of Wikipedias that I didn't go looking for this. I've made scores of edits in the past 5 days, and I happened upon this item purely by chance, as I was posting a request for an article about "Deafness around the world". A little way down the list where I inserted my request, I spotted a decidely odd request for an article about "Mike is better than Jake Theory". After approx. 2 seconds of puzzlement, I reached the obvious conclusion -- and took the necessary action:

(→Anthropology, Sociology, Class Structure - deleted "Mike is better than Jake Theory" - this is obviously a joke, since everyone knows that Jake is better than Mike :))

[edit] Project directory

Hello. The WikiProject Council has recently updated the Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Directory. This new directory includes a variety of categories and subcategories which will, with luck, potentially draw new members to the projects who are interested in those specific subjects. Please review the directory and make any changes to the entries for your project that you see fit. There is also a directory of portals, at User:B2T2/Portal, listing all the existing portals. Feel free to add any of them to the portals or comments section of your entries in the directory. The three columns regarding assessment, peer review, and collaboration are included in the directory for both the use of the projects themselves and for that of others. Having such departments will allow a project to more quickly and easily identify its most important articles and its articles in greatest need of improvement. If you have not already done so, please consider whether your project would benefit from having departments which deal in these matters. It is my hope that all the changes to the directory can be finished by the first of next month. Please feel free to make any changes you see fit to the entries for your project before then. If you should have any questions regarding this matter, please do not hesitate to contact me. Thank you. B2T2 13:35, 26 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] After the whole of Esperanza gets nominated for MfD - fears that the whole of the Department of Fun may be nominated for MfD

With the nomination of the whole of Esperanza for deletion and the deletion of a good many pages there, my fears are now that the whole of the Department of Fun may also get nominated for deletion, which if it happens, would be a great shame for Wikipedia. Along with all the serious work we do, a bit of community is also needed to keep spirits up. Its also somewhat ironic that Esperanza in spanish is "hope", yet all the "hope" is being deleted. Keep up the good work. If the Department of Fun and especially WP:BJAODN goes, Wikipedia will be so much more of a sadder place 16px‎ --tgheretford (talk) 15:42, 18 November 2006 (UTC)

As a side note and because of the deletions already taken place, you have a good few more red links on your front page now. --tgheretford (talk) 15:42, 18 November 2006 (UTC)
OK, I just removed those, thanks. --Alf melmac 15:49, 18 November 2006 (UTC)

I guess that the only thing preventing them from listing this for deletion is that Jimbo Wales is on this. bibliomaniac15 23:36, 18 November 2006 (UTC)
We, the Deletionist Cabal, have voted to refrain from nominating this page for Deletion and summoning our Dark Armies of Cruftslayers, since the page sensably references our grand crusade as a religion with the reference to Meta. --ElaragirlTalk|Count 19:25, 28 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Department of Fun up for MfD

I warned it would happen, even having Jimbo Wales as a member hasn't prevented it. Someone has nominated the Department of Fun for MfD here:

WP:MFD#Wikipedia:Department of Fun --tgheretford (talk) 10:52, 3 December 2006 (UTC)

Having Jimbo Wales doesn't prevent anything. However, when a SPA nominates it for deletion and there are already 3 strong deletionists voting keep, I doubt you have much to worry about. --ElaragirlTalk|Count 17:10, 3 December 2006 (UTC)
