Dependency has a number of meanings:
- a chemical dependency is such a strong need for a substance that it becomes necessary to have this substance just to function properly.

- In law and tax legislation, a dependent is a person who depends on another as a primary source of income. For example, a minor child, under the age of majority, is a dependent of his or her parent and the existence of the dependent enables the providor, such as a parent or guardian, to claim a deduction for the purpose of income tax calculations.
