Denton and Reddish is a constituency represented in the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom. It elects one Member of Parliament (MP) by the first past the post system of election.

[edit] Boundaries
Situated in eastern Greater Manchester, with an electorate of around 68,000, the constituency of Denton and Reddish contains the council wards of Audenshaw, Denton North East, Denton South, Denton West and Dukinfield from Tameside Metropolitan Borough and Reddish North and Reddish South from Stockport Metropolitan Borough Council. It covers the former townships of Audenshaw, Denton, Dukinfield, Haughton Green, Heaton Chapel, Heaton Norris, Lancashire Hill and Reddish. It has existed as a Parliamentary Constituency since 1983.
Prior to the seat's creation in 1983, the Reddish part of the seat was contained within the Conservative-Labour marginal Stockport North constituency, and the large Brinnington council estate was in the more Labour-inclined Stockport South seat. Audenshaw and Denton then formed the main part of the Manchester Gorton constituency. Dukinfield, prior to 1997 was part of the Stalybridge and Hyde seat.
In 1997, the Labour leaning Brinnington Ward (Stockport MBC) was transferred out of the constituency, into the Stockport seat, and was replaced with the equally Labour leaning Dukinfield Ward in Tameside. All other wards here are very strongly Labour-inclined, except Audenshaw, which is now a marginal battleground between the Liberal Democrats and Labour in local elections, although in parliamentary elections tends to support Labour as heavily as the rest of the constituency. Labour regained the Audenshaw ward from the Lib Dems in the 2006 local elections.
Historically, both Audenshaw and Denton West returned Conservative councillors, but this has not occurred since 1992 and 1987 respectively.
In the Boundary Commission's provisional recommendations for parliamentary constituencies, which were published in 2005, the Reddish part of the constituency was to be re-patriated with the Stockport Parliamentary seat. Denton, Audenshaw and Dukinfield would have been joined with Droylsden East, West and the St. Peter's Wards in Tameside to form a 'Denton Borough Constituency', wholly in Tameside. The proposed new seat would almost certainly have remained a Labour Party stronghold.
However, following a public inquiry into Greater Manchester's constituencies, held in late 2005, the Inspector made a number of changes to the original proposals for the county. He recommended that the Denton and Reddish seat should continue as at present with five Wards (Denton North East, South and West; Audenshaw and Dukinfield) from Tameside and two Wards (Reddish North, Reddish South) from Stockport, with slight readjustments to reflect the new Ward boundaries introduced in 2004. The new Parliamentary boundaries in Greater Manchester will be in force at the next General Election, expected in 2009/10.
