Denmark national football team season 2005

In 2005, the Denmark national football team represented the country of Denmark in 10 matches. Eight of these matches were qualification matches for the 2006 FIFA World Cup. The remaining two matches were friendly matches.

[edit] Greece vs. Denmark

On 2005-02-02, Denmark played a 2006 FIFA World Cup qualification match against Greece away at Karaiskaki Stadium, Athens. The match ended with a 2-1 win for Greece. After 25 minutes, Greek midfielder Theodoros Zagorakis surprised the Danish defence when he shot a free kick directly in goal while the Danes were still busy positioning players to shield the goal. Six minutes later, Greek midfielder Angelos Basinas scored on a penalty kick for a Greek 2-0 lead. Danish winger Dennis Rommedahl scored just before the break, but following a goalless second half Greece won 2-1.[1]

[edit] Kazakhstan vs. Denmark

On 2005-03-26, Denmark played a 2006 FIFA World Cup qualification match against Kazakhstan home at Parken Stadium, Copenhagen. The match ended with a 3-0 win for Denmark. 33-year old striker Peter Møller was called up to replace Peter Madsen who had to call in sick. After eight minutes of the game, Møller had scored his first goal for Denmark since the 1998 FIFA World Cup game against Nigeria. Danish midfielder Christian Poulsen scored in the 33rd minute, before Møller scored his second goal three minutes into the second half, for the final result of 3-0.[2]

On 2005-03-30, Denmark played a 2006 FIFA World Cup qualification match against Ukraine away at NSC Olympiyskiy Stadium, Kiev. The match ended with a 1-0 win for Ukraine. The first half was goalless, before Ukrainian striker Andriy Voronin scored the winning goal in the 67th minute for the 1-0 win for Ukraine.[3]

On 2005-06-02, Denmark played a friendly match against Finland away at Ratina Stadion, Tampere. The match was the debut game of defenders Daniel Agger and Allan K. Jepsen, midfielder Rasmus Würtz and striker Søren Larsen. It ended with a 1-0 win for Denmark. The game was goalless until one minute before the end, when Danish midfielder Michael Silberbauer scored his first goal for the national team for a 1-0 win.[4]

On 2005-06-08, Denmark played a 2006 FIFA World Cup qualification match against Albania home at Parken Stadium, Copenhagen. The match ended with a 3-1 win for Denmark. After four minutes of the game, Søren Larsen scored for a 1-0 lead. One minute after the break, Larsen scored his second goal and eight minutes later Danish winger Martin Jørgensen scored for a 3-0 lead. Danish striker Jon Dahl Tomasson missed a penalty kick, and Albanian striker Erjon Bogdani scored a reducing goal for the final result of 3-1.[5]

On 2005-08-07, Denmark played a friendly match against England home at Parken Stadium, Copenhagen. The match was the debut game of defender Michael Gravgaard, and it ended with a 4-1 win for Denmark. The first half of the game ended goalless. 15 minutes into the second half, Dennis Rommedahl scored to 1-0, when Jon Dahl Tomasson passed the ball to him a feet from the goalline. Three minutes later, Rommedahl headed the ball to Tomasson who converted the chance into a 2-0 lead. Four minutes later, Danish defender Michael Gravgaard scored on a header in his debut game, for a 3-0 lead. English striker Wayne Rooney reduced the lead to 3-1 when he scored three minutes before the end, but Søren Larsen scored the final goal in the last minute of the game, for a Danish 4-1 win.[6]

[edit] Turkey vs. Denmark

On 2005-09-03, Denmark played a 2006 FIFA World Cup qualification match against Turkey away at Inönü Stadium, Istanbul. The match ended in a 2-2 draw. Danish midfielder Claus Jensen gave Denmark a 1-0 lead four minutes before the break, but three minutes into the second half Turkish midfielder Okan Buruk scored to level the game 1-1. Turkey moved ahead 2-1 nine minutes before the end of the game, when Turkish midfielder Tümer Metin scored directly on a free kick. With five minutes left of the game, Søren Larsen was brought onto the pitch, and in the very last minute of the game he scored the levelling goal for a 2-2 draw.[7]

On 2005-09-07, Denmark played a 2006 FIFA World Cup qualification match against Georgia home at Parken Stadium, Copenhagen. The match ended with a 6-1 win for Denmark. Claus Jensen scored directly on free kick after nine minutes of the first half, and nine minutes later the Georgian team was decimated. Defender Zurab Khizanishvili was directly red carded when he toppled Jon Dahl Tomasson to deny him a free chance at goal, just outside the penalty area. Christian Poulsen headed a goal to a 2-0 lead, 30 minutes into the first half, before Georgian striker Georgi Demetradze scored on a penalty to reduce the Danish lead to 2-1 six minutes later. Daniel Agger scored another Danish goal on a header, as he made it 3-1 for Denmark three minutes before the break. In the second half, Jon Dahl Tomasson scored to 4-1 after nine minutes. Søren Larsen was brought on as a substitute with 27 minutes to go, and he scored two goals to make the final result a 6-1 victory.[8]

On 2005-10-08, Denmark played a 2006 FIFA World Cup qualification match against Greece home at Parken Stadium, Copenhagen. Denmark won the match 1-0 on Michael Gravgaard's header six minutes before the break.[9]

[edit] Kazakhstan vs. Denmark

On 2005-10-12, Denmark played a 2006 FIFA World Cup qualification match against Kazakhstan away at Almaty Central Stadium, Almaty. The match ended with a 2-1 win for Denmark. After a scoreless first half, Michael Gravgaard scored to 1-0 and Jon Dahl Tomasson to 2-0 in the first four minutes of the second half. The Kazakh goal for the final result of 2-1 was scored by midfielder Aleksandr Kuchma with four minutes left of the game. The Kazakhs got defender Igor Avdeev red carded two minutes before the end, following his second yellow card in the game.[10]
