Denis Foley
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Denis Foley (born May 1934) is a retired Irish Fianna Fáil politician. He was a TD for the constituency of Kerry North. Foley was first elected to Dáil Éireann in the 1981 general election and retained his seat until losing it at the 1989 general election to party rival Tom McEllistrim, Jnr. He regained it at the 1992 general election and held it until he retired at the 2002 general election. His daughter, Norma Foley, failed to secure the party nomination to contest his seat.
Following revelations that he had held an Ansbacher (offshore) account to avoid tax, he resigned from Fianna Fáil to become an independent TD on February 9th, 2000. He also resigned from the Dáil Public Accounts Committee and in May 2000 he became the first TD to receive a penalty for breaching the Ethics in Public Office Act when he was suspended from the Dáil for 14 days.
