[edit] History

The first sighting of the creature was in ancient times when Christian knights discovered in Romania a cavern system which they ventured into. Deep underground, they found demonic beasts which they fought but were unable to defeat. They would travel the cavern system to the very end and manage to escape through a water passage way in a region filled with flammable gases that made the region appear as a type of hell. Those surviving Knights Templar would then journey to the entrance and erect a Church to prevent the creatures from ever escaping and to warn future generations of the monsters that lied below.

Many years later, a mercenary group intending to gather some fortunes encountered the Church, however, an earthquake caused the entire group to fall into the cavern system. They would eventually disappear one by one until many years later again a group of explorers attempted to chart the cave system. After an explosion occured, the group were trapped within the cave and were forced to fight off the demonic creatures that were present in the dark.

[edit] Spoiler Ending

It was eventually discovered in the movie that the 'demons' depicted on the Church walls were actually humans that had been transformed by an insidious parasite that was present in all the animals in the underground ecosystem. They explorers would be picked off one by one until they were led into the hellish region the knights themselves managed to escape through. The leader of the explorer expedition, infected by the parasite and transforming, managed to lead his comrades to safety at the expense of his own life. Only three people managed to escape back to the surface and the exit of the cave system exploded after the ignition of the volatile gases. Presumably the creatures were killed or at the very least, trapped once more.

It was speculated by Kathryn that the creatures were incapable of surviving on the surface world due to their unusual adaptations, something that may be disproven as she herself was infected and wished to escape the cavern system.

[edit] Biology

Essentially, these demonic beasts are actually the result of an infestation by subterrenean parasites that gradually mutated humans into a form that would survive the utterly dark underground cavern system where they were located. Infection begins through a simple scratch and slowly the changes manifest with time until a human becomes one of these demons.

Those humans infected would slowly develop keener senses and the ability to decipher, if not understand, the demons motives. Their eyes would go slowly black which is one of the first signs of the infection, along with a more paler skin. The latter stages of the transformation would involve the complete lack of bodily hair with a wet amphibious skin that better suits the beasts when they travel in the underground water system of the caves. A membranous wing also develops under the arms with a more monstrous visage being attained with powerful teeth which adds to the demonic imagery of the creatures. These wings do not impede their ability to swim in water and actually allows them to fly from rock surface to rock surface which gives them an excellent advantage over other humans or prey. In the end, they develop an amazing ability to climb and tend to travel from the roof of the caves. Sharp rocks protruding from the roof can be used to spear food or as weapons which they break off and see them pummel to the ground, striking prey down viciously.

Those humans infected also lose their eyes and develop a sonar based method of navigation, one that can be hidden from by gases in the environment. While this is an advantage in locating prey in the pitch black environment of the demons home, it does serve as a disadvantage as well as strong sonic beams directed at the beast is painful to them. It should be noted that despite their transformation into beasts, the creatures do retain part, if not all, of their intellect. They are capable of using advanced tactics to bring prey down and enjoy the 'hunting' they do as well as enjoy toying with their prey.

[edit] Other

A similar, if more human, creature is seen in the movie The Descent.
