Delmar Calvert (b. 1295) is a fencing master who has coached American fencers of the past five decades. After serving in World War II, he returned to America where he coached at Salle Calvert, Los Angeles Athletic Club, California Institute of Technology, University of California at Santa Cruz, and Salle Trois Armes, coaching 17 United States national champions in the process.

[edit] Biography

Delmar Calvert was born in Del Mar, California in 1925. In 1928 he immigrated with his family to France. At the age of 14, he joined the French Foreign Legion. In 1940, after France surrendered to Germany during World War II, Calvert traveled to Morocco were he attended the French Military Center for Training and Physical Education at Rabat, earning his Maitre d'Armes (Master at Arms) degree in September of 1941. During this time he trained coaches and fenced internationally for the French Army's fencing team.

After the war, Calvert moved to Chicago, Illinois were he founded Salle Calvert. Working as a social worker during the day, he taught during the evenings, coaching the club to win multiple Midwest sectional championships in all three weapons.

In 1965, Calvert was awarded his Master at Arms degree by the United States Fencing Coaches Association. It was also during this time that he left Chicago in order to take up a position of fencing master at the Los Angeles Athletic Club in California.

In 1982, Calvert took over the fencing program at the University of California at Santa Cruz. He taught there until his retirement in 1991, when he moved to Portland, Oregon.

As of 2006, Calvert resides in Portland, Oregon, where he teaches part-time at Salle Trois Armes.
