[edit] Multicultural Factor
For such a small town, Delhi is known as a reasonably multicultural place. There are Belgian, German, Polish and Hungarian halls, as well as several other ethnic communities, including Dutch, Portuguese, Greeks, Ukrainians, Lithuanians, Britons. Surnames of people from different nationalities can be spotted at the Delhi Cemetery. Although it was traditionally a Roman Catholic cemetery, anyone who lives or has lived in Delhi can now be buried at that particular cemetery.
[edit] Academia
The town also has its own public high school named Delhi District Secondary School that has been under closure threats in the past, but has now put that behind them. The school has approximately 400 students. There is also a public elementary school called Delhi Public School that teaches young children from nearby hamlets like Pine Grove and La Salette. Saint Frances Cabrini Catholic School is also located in Delhi and is part of the Brant Haldimand Norfolk Catholic District School Board (BHNCDSB)
[edit] Tobacco Heritage
In the western section of town, there is a tobacco museum that is close to park where the locals have the tendency to throw picnics in the summer. Also, Jamaicans, Mexicans, and French Canadians work the farms around Delhi and other towns of Norfolk County during the spring, summer, and fall months. They usually arrive around mid-to late February and return to their homelands around early-to-mid November.
[edit] Recent Municipal History
Until 2001, Delhi was located within the Township of Delhi, a municipal government within the Regional Municipality of Haldimand-Norfolk. It is now a part of the single-tier municipality of Norfolk County, and so Delhi does not have its own mayor and council below the county level.
[edit] Area Politics
Haldimand-Norfolk is a political riding with Toby Barrett currently sitting as MPP and Diane Finley as MP. Norfolk County, and therefore Delhi's mayor is Dennis Travale.
[edit] Sports
Delhi is home to the Delhi Travellers, a junior hockey team that plays in the Southern Ontario Junior Hockey League.
