Deir Hanna is in the hills of the Lower Galilee, 30 km NE of Nazareth, in the north of Israel.
The town began as a monastery which became a castle in the Daher El-Omar era. Parts of the castle are still standing, as are the walls and the old village church and mosque, and it is considered a tourist attraction. Today, the town has a population of about 8100: 20% Christians and 80% Muslims. The town had been through a thorough modernization process in the last 10 years, and now has a full education system, healthcare facilities and sports playgrounds.
