Defected Records Ltd. (usually known in the music industry simply as Defected) is a record label that specializes in house and dance music. It was founded in 1998 by Simon Dunmore and Janet Bell (former executives at AM:PM Records), and is based in London. Defected owns three sublabels: ITH Records (specialized in mixed compilations), Fluential Records (created to promote new artists) and Spectrum Records (created in 2001, but closed the following year).
Defected's first release was "Can't Get Enough" by Soulsearcher. Since then, the British label has released nearly 200 singles. Not bothering to sign any artists, Defected usually releases specific tracks by specific projects. Names that have published by Defected include Bob Sinclar, Junior Jack, ATFC, Sandy Rivera and Masters At Work. Many singles are re-released in CD format after having success as 12-inch vinyls in the clubs. Due to its popularity in nearly every release, Defected has both been praised for its business sense in signing hits and criticised for being too commercial.
On occasion, Defected also released full albums. Martin Solveig, Kings of Tomorrow and the Africanism All Stars project are among the few projects to have albums on Defected, both in CD and vinyl form. Defected is better known among mainstream buyers for its various compilations series, including Defected Sessions, Soulheaven and ...In The House. Most of these are based on Defected parties hosted in the Pacha clubs in London and Ibiza, and are mixed by a variety of famous DJs, such as Joey Negro and DJ Gregory. Eivissa '05, a spin-off of the ...In The House series, is mixed by label owner Dunmore himself.
Dunmore has also provided a home for a few artists to create their own labels: M Records (run by Michael Grey of Full Intention) and Stealth Records (run by Roger Sanchez) which have since then taken their labels outside the Defected operation and now run completely independent operations, with Defected no longer involved at all.
