Decatur City Schools

The Decatur City Schools is a school system located in the city of Decatur, Alabama, and is home to two of Alabama's International Baccalaureate High Schools.[1] The school system is also the second largest employer in Decatur.

Decatur's spending per student is one of the highest in the state, and higher than many places in the nation.[2]
The percent of students going on to post high school education is above the national average, as well as the test scores of students.
School buildings are are among the safest schools in the state, with several winning recognition for their focus on safety.[3] Decatur High and Austin High are the only schools in the state to have won the Safe Schools Award both years that it has been presented.

- Over $8 million in scholarships were offered to DCS seniors last year.
- $3 Million went to Austin High School
- $5 Million went to Decatur High School students.
- Over 70% of graduates go on to post-secondary education
Currently attending: Vanderbilt, Wake Forest, Georgia Tech, MIT, Birmingham Southern University, Sanford, Tufts, and University of Texas at Austin, as well as honors programs at University of Alabama and Auburn University.
- Over 900 high school students are in one or more AP, Honors, and advanced courses.
- 169 students are currently involved in dual enrollment courses.
- The are currently former DCS students in all three military acadmemies in the United States, including 3 in West Point.
- The ROTC program has produced seven academy students in the past nine years.
- All 15 schools for grades K-8 are certified as ARI sites.
- ACT, college entrance exam, and SAT scores exceed state and national averages.
- Ten of its fifteen schools which participated in the state Writing Assessment received A's on the most recent State Report Card.
- Drop-out rate has dramatically decreased from 30% to 8.5% in five years.
- The school system has 12 national Board Certified teachers.
- High schools have been recognized as some of the safest in the state.
- Decatur High School, and Austin High School are the only schools in the state to have received the "Safe Schools Award" every year that has been presented.
- Decatur City Schools was the first school system in Alabama to join a partnership with the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C.
- High school bands have longstanding history of superior ratings:
- Decatur High School leads the state of Alabama with the most Superior Ratings at State Competition, with 57 superiors, since the competition's formation in 1946.
- Decatur High School also has never received less than a Superior Rating at any District Competition since its formation.
- Austin High School has the longest string of Superior Ratings at State Competition.
