Deborah Ortiz

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Deborah V. Ortiz (born March 19, 1957) is a Democratic California State Senator, representing the 6th State Senate District. She was originally elected in 1998 with 55% of the vote, and subsequently re-elected in 2002 with 70.8% of the vote. Prior to her election to the State Senate she served in the California State Assembly from 1996 to 1998 representing the 9th Assembly District of California.

California limits state senators to two terms, so Ortiz is "termed out" in 2006. She ran for Secretary of State, a position currently held by Bruce McPherson (R). She lost the June 6, 2006 Democratic primary to State Senator Debra Bowen (D-Marina del Rey).

Notable issues of which she has campaigned for include stem cell research, and preventing obesity.

She belongs to the following:

Joint Committees:

  • Legislative Audit, Rules-Joint Rule 40

Select Committees:

  • Capitol Area Flood Protection (Chair)
  • Health Insurance Crisis in California

Standing Committees:

  • Agriculture, Appropriations, Health (Chair)

Sub Committees:

  • Health Subcommittee on Aging and Long Term Care
  • Health Subcommittee on Medicine and Health Care (Chair)
  • Health Subcommittee on Mental Health and Neurodevelopmental Disorders (Chair)
  • Health Subcommittee on Stem Cell Research Oversight (Chair)
