This is a list of people (and creatures) that have been killed in the Harry Potter series. The list is sorted in chronological order within each book.
Entries in italics indicate deaths occurring "off-stage" — outside the actual timeline of the respective book.

- James and Lily Potter — murdered by Lord Voldemort on October 31, 1981.
- Professor Quirrell — was host for the bodiless Voldemort, and died shortly after Voldemort abandoned him.

- Moaning Myrtle — killed by the Basilisk when Hagrid and Tom Riddle attended Hogwarts, June 1943.
- The Basilisk — killed when Harry plunged a sword into the roof of its mouth.
- Part of Voldemort's soul, represented as teenage Tom Riddle — The diary Horcrux was destroyed by Harry with a Basilisk fang.

- 12 Muggle Bystanders — Killed by Peter Pettigrew as he escaped from Sirius Black, November 1st, 1981. Sirius was charged with the murders.
- Binky — Lavender Brown's rabbit. Death seemingly predicted by Professor Trelawney.

- The Riddle Family — killed by Avada Kedavra curses cast by Lord Voldemort.
- Mrs Crouch — died in Azkaban disguised as her son Barty Crouch Jr.
- Bertha Jorkins — killed by Lord Voldemort.
- Frank Bryce — killed by an Avada Kedavra curse cast by Lord Voldemort.
- Barty Crouch Sr. — killed by Barty Crouch Jr.
- Cedric Diggory — killed by Peter Pettigrew (on Lord Voldemort's orders).
- Barty Crouch Jr. — received a Dementor's Kiss (technically still alive, but living without a soul—a fate described "worse than death" in the books).

- Broderick Bode — strangled by a potted Devil's Snare plant, which was most likely sent by Lucius Malfoy or another Death Eater.
- Sirius Black — hit by a spell by Bellatrix Lestrange, sending him falling through a veiled archway that separates between the world of the living and that of the dead.

- Part of Voldemort's soul — The ring Horcrux was destroyed by Albus Dumbledore.
- Amelia Bones — brutally murdered by Voldemort.
- Emmeline Vance — killed by Death Eaters.
- Fox — killed by Bellatrix Lestrange.
- Hannah Abbott's mother — murdered by Death Eaters.
- Igor Karkaroff — killed by Death Eaters.
- Five-year-old brother of Montgomery sisters — killed by Greyback because his mother would not help the Death Eaters.
- Marvolo Gaunt — died after release from Azkaban. Possibly starved to death.
- Merope Riddle née Gaunt — died giving birth to Tom Riddle.
- Morfin Gaunt — died in Azkaban.
- Hepzibah Smith — murdered by Lord Voldemort.
- Hokey — old age.
- Aragog — old age.
- Gibbon — got hit by one of the Killing Curses the "huge blond Death Eater" was firing everywhere.
- Albus Dumbledore — killed by Severus Snape, with the Avada Kedavra curse at the Battle of Hogwarts.

- Nicolas Flamel and his wife Perenelle - Died some time after the Philosopher's Stone was destroyed (as confirmed by Dumbledore).
