Between September 1970 and February 1971, The Firesign Theatre performed twenty one episodes of a live radio program titled Dear Friends on KPFK radio in Los Angeles. These programs were recorded and later edited into one hour shows for national syndication.

These shows were distributed to radio stations on 12 inch, white label LPs.

Many selected parts of these shows were selected and released by the group on the Columbia Records label under the title Dear Friends in 1972. Other parts were released-- without mention of their origin-- as parts of the group's "Just Folks" album on Butterfly Records in 1977.
