Dragon Ball Z: Return my Gohan!! (ドラゴンボールゼット オラの悟飯を返せッ! Doragonbōru Zetto: Ora no Gohan wo kaese!?), originally simply titled Dragon Ball Z, is the first movie in the Dragon Ball Z franchise. (It was preceded by three Dragon Ball movies.) It was originally released in Japan on July 15, 1989, between episodes 11 and 12. FUNimation's title is Dragon Ball Z: Dead Zone and Bridge Entertainment's title is The Pursuit of Garlic.
The movie was originally released in America on VHS and DVD in 1997. The English dub was a joint venture between Pioneer (now Geneon) Entertainment and FUNimation Entertainment. The dub used the Ocean Group (who also did the voices for the first two seasons of DBZ) and it featured dialogue accurate to the Japanese version and had the original Japanese background music. In 2005, the film was re-released as part of FUNimation's Ultimate Uncut Editions due to Geneon losing the distribution rights for seasons 1 and 2 of DBZ and the first three DBZ movies. The new dub featured FUNimation's voice actors as well as dialogue that is not quite as accurate of a translation as that on the Pioneer release. In addition, the new dub replaces the Japanese music with FUNimation's own music.
This movie, along with The World's Strongest and The Tree of Might, was released in a DVD box set from FUNimation on November 14, 2006.
In Great Britain, the movie was dubbed by a group called "Bridge" (as "The Pursuit of Garlic") which used the original music but with a script vastly different from the original. This version also sported some odd name changes, such as Piccolo being called "Big Green" and Kami-sama being referenced as the "Green God".

[edit] Plot
The movie begins with Son Gokū's household being attacked by an unknown group of men. Gokū is out fishing during the attack and after sensing danger, Gokū returns only to find Son Gohan has been kidnapped. The group responsible for the attack are Garlic Jr.'s henchmen, and it is later revealed that they have kidnapped Gohan because of the fourth Dragon Ball that was placed onto his hat. After retrieving the remaining Dragon Balls, Garlic Jr. summons Shenlong and is granted immortality. Gokū appears to take back his son, later followed by Kami who gives a brief history of Garlic Jr. Gokū proceeds to try to find Gohan when he is attacked by the villain's gang. After brief fighting, Kuririn and Piccolo appear, and what with Garlic Jr.'s newfound immortality and a "hulked-up" second form it appears nothing can stand in his way. Eventually Garlic Jr. opens up the portal known as the 'Dead Zone', intending to suck his enemies into the void. Gohan then becomes enraged from his father and friends being put in danger and releases his latent energy, blasting Garlic Jr. into his own vortex to be trapped for an eternity.
