Dead Skin Mask

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Dead Skin Mask is a song released in 1990 on the album Seasons in the Abyss by Slayer. The song was inspired by the exploits of serial killer Ed Gein.

The song is often played at Slayer's live shows, and is also one of the most popular Slayer songs, which is interesting, considering that it's also one of Slayer's slowest songs, in stark contrast to the band's high-speed thrash style. The singer Tom Araya commonly introduces the song with a play on the Mr Ed television show theme. Araya states that "It's story time. It's a story about a man named Ed, who used to sleep and dance with the dead.". The latter portion is often shouted along with by crowds familiar with the introduction. The song title is then introduced as three separate sentences "Dead. Skin. Mask."

Dead Skin Mask was covered by black metal band Dark Funeral. Also uniquely covered by avantgarde/doom metal band Aarni, in a version titled Persona Mortuae Cutis, released as the final track on Aarni's 2001 demo.
