[edit] Song Summary

According to the iTunes interview, "Dead!" was written around the time of "The End." Gerard Way, the lead singer of My Chemical Romance, has stated that the song starts off as kind of a scathing social commentary but which ended up being a song that perfectly fit the album's story. Way says that the song has sort of a 90's Brit-pop feeling to it. The song was inspired by "Mr. Blue Sky" by Electric Light Orchestra but with some moments of Blur and Pulp in the song. Way says it fits great in the album after the song "The End" because it ends up telling a story. The B section of the song reminds the band of Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band by The Beatles.

Also in the iTunes interview, Ray Toro of My Chemical Romance said he loves the ending of "Dead!" because he thinks it's a tribute to all of the bands they love. The band also mentioned the ending is a la-la sing-a-long and that Gerard came up with the ending himself. Toro says the ending of "Dead!" is the first time he, Gerard, and rhythm guitarist Frank Iero sang together at once.
