From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
De Smelt is a sports arena located in Assen, The Netherlands, it is located 10 m above sea level. The venue opened in the 1970s with a 400-meter speed skating track. Later an ice hockey hall was included next to the speed skating track. In the early 1990s the city of Assen became the owner of the sports complex. The speed skating track became semi indoors and a subtropic swimming pool was added.
Assen was not able to afford the finances of the complex and in 1997 business man Hennie van der Most became the new owner. Van der Most renovated the complex in the years after into a quality sports venue.
