De Quervain's thyroiditis

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

de Quervain's thyroiditis, also known as subacute granulomatous thyroiditis or subacute thyroiditis, usually occurs in females between 30 and 50 years of age. It is believed to be viral in origin, usually preceded by a upper respiratory tract infection. Patients will experience a hyperthyroid period(extravasation of colloid), with neck pain and fever, then become hypothyroid before resolving to euthyroid. The symptoms are those of hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism. Treatment is NSAID. Corticosteroids may be of help in refractory cases.
