[edit] Synopsis
The pilot episode opens with the sun rising and Detective Brett Hopper (Diggs) rising for another day at work at the precinct. He stayed over at the home of his girlfriend, Rita Shelten (Bloodgood). After leaving her apartment, he stops for coffee and happens to saves a woman from being struck by a bus. Then he goes to his apartment where he retrieves his mail and finds his rooms in disarray, which he at first attributes to intruders, but then assumes to be his dog's fault. As he begins listening to his recorded phone messages, he is interrupted by a SWAT team, which breaks the door down and arrests him for murdering Assistant District Attorney Alberto Garza.
While questioning him, the police reveal that they found the murder weapon in his closet with his fingerprints on it. Several subplots involving his overlapping personal and professional life are revealed as Hopper talks with people during the day, but then Hopper is put in jail. During the night, he is knocked out and taken to a quarry by unknown armed men. They demand that he admit to the murder of Garza, and show him a video of his girlfriend (his only alibi) being shot. He is also shown a video of his sister and her children, and is then injected with a sedative.
Hopper wakes up back in bed next to Rita. After some confusion, he realizes that he is reliving the same day over again. Hopper finds himself reliving serial run-throughs of the same day, trying to make each one turn out differently. His attempts to change events based on his memory of the previous run-through of the day make some things turn out better, but events again spin out of his control. (Some days, the woman he saved from the bus accident is killed if Hopper does not attend to it.) Although each day begins the same, both Hopper's memory and his physical status--including any injuries he sustains--are carried over over from one reliving of the day to the next. (He soon realizes that he could be killed since any fatal injury would be "carried over" as well.) In remembering each run-through, however, Hopper accumulates more and more knowledge about the people and events involved in the plot to frame him for murder. He applies the information gained from one time around to investigate different leads the next time around. He also learns from the mistakes of each "day" so as to try to do better the next time. In one episode, he learns that when he is able to work through one of the many problems in his life, the next "day" that problem, at least, is genuinely resolved and does not recur. Unfortunately, his central problems are not so easily resolved. Every day he wakes up knowing that he will be wanted for a murder he did not commit and that everyone he loves will be threatened by a conspiracy whose origins and aims continue to baffle him.
