Dave Cunning is a comic book artist. He is the writer/penciller/inker on Billy Joe Tequila, penciller on Ma.B and Down Under, and the founder and Director of Local Act Comics, an Australian comic publisher.

My childhood dream was to be a comic book artist. Disillusioned by my art classes in high school the dream was put aside and I went to university to study psychology. The urge was re-awakened while I was doing a course in freelance illustration and cartooning about a year ago. I made my way under the guidance of Greg Gates to the PulpFaction forums to speak with others who shared my dream. After talking with a number of writers about potential projects I was left with the options of approaching a comic book publisher or self publishing. With a background in publishing I leaned towards self publishing and Local Act Comics was born. As time went on I looked more and more at Australian comics and found that there was very little material in the public eye that could be classified as successful.

I really want to raise the public opinion of local Australian comics and comic creators. I believe that we have some amazing talent in this country that just doesn’t know how to market themselves or produce an end product that looks professional enough for the general public to accept. Unfortunately there are a lot of amateurish attempts out there that the wider comic audience just will not accept.

I am trying to achieve a broad range of genres to appeal to all age groups and comic readers, as well as produce sequential comics that come out regularly with a consistent style. We are aiming for a local market but ultimately the international market is the goal. I’d love to see a few more Aussies getting the public’s attention with the rest of the world’s talent. I guess I really just want to help others to achieve their dream of being comic book creators as I am making that dream a reality myself – and it feels great!
