Sir David Wright, GCMG LVO was a United Kingdom diplomat, Her Britannic Majesty's Ambassador to Japan 1996-1999.

He was born in 1944 and educated at Wolverhampton Grammar School, and Peterhouse, University of Cambridge
[edit] Foreign Office
He joined the Foreign Office in 1966 as a 3rd Secretary. From that year until 1972 he served in Tokyo - while there he was promoted to 2nd Secretary - and from 1972 to 1975 he was 2nd Secretary and then 1st Secretary in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, London. In 1975-1976 he was at the Ecole Nationale d'Administration, Paris.
From 1976 to 1980 he was 1st Secretary in Paris, and was then seconded to be Private Secretary to the Secretary of the Cabinet (1980-1982), as a Grade 7 civil servant. From 1982-1985 he was Counsellor (Economic) in Tokyo.
Returning again to London, from 1985-1988 he was Head of the Personnel Services Department. From there he was seconded to be Deputy Private Secretary to the Prince of Wales (1988-1990).
Sir David became Ambassador to Korea in 1990, and in 1994 returned to London as Deputy Under Secretary of State in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.
In 1996 he became Ambassador to Japan, a post which he left in 1999 to become Chief Executive of British Trade International. He retired in 2002.

He is vice-president of the China-Britain Business Council, a member of the International Advisory Board of All Nippon Airways, and a Governor of the Royal Shakespeare Company.
He was made a LVO in 1990, CMG in 1992 and promoted to KCMG in 1996. He later became a GCMG.
