David Thorpe (writer)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

David Thorpe (often writes as Dr. David Thorpe, b. October 26th, 1982) is an American music writer. He writes regular columns for Boston's alternative newspaper Weekly Dig and humor website Something Awful. His work was selected for inclusion in Da Capo Press's compilation Best Music Writing 2006. His column, Your Band Sucks has been running on Something Awful since October 2003, on a biweekly to monthly basis. In it, he affects the persona of a NASA rocket scientist who also happens to be the world's most knowledgeable and vicious music nerd. Thorpe also regularly contributes to the site's Fashion Swat feature, collaborating with Zack Parsons. He was hired as a writer after a long-running thread in the forums where he boasted that he could snobbishly tear down any musician. He also appeared on Attack of the Show! as a representative for the site, where he presented misinformation ranging from an incorrect URL to gross exaggerations about the cost of joining the site's forums.

He admits that much of his music snob persona is greatly exaggerated; he often receives hostile e-mail from readers who assume that he acts that way all of the time. The Chameleons, The Gun Club and Country Joe and the Fish are among the artists he has expressed out-of-character admiration for.
