David Starobin

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

David Starobin (born September 27, 1951 in New York City) is an American classical guitarist.

Starobin started playing the guitar at the age of seven, and studied first with Manuel Gayol, and then with Albert Valdes Blain and Aaron Shearer at the Peabody Conservatory. Starobin has chaired the guitar departments of Brooklyn College, Bennington College, the North Carolina School of the Arts, the State University of New York at Purchase, and most recently the Manhattan School of Music (from 1993 to 2004).

In 1981, Starobin founded the record label Bridge Records, which in the past specialised in recordings involving the guitar, but today is more wide-ranging. His 'New Music With Guitar' series (now in its sixth volume) is recognised as a landmark in guitar recording. He has received eleven Grammy nominations.
