Guitarist and songwriter David Roback was a member of paisley underground '80s group Rain Parade.
He and his brother Stephen Roback, a bassist guitarist, formed a band called the Unconscious, which also included Susanna Hoffs (who would later form the all-girl band The Bangles).
When the Roback brothers later formed a band called Opal, they were joined by vocalist Kendra Smith, another member of the paisley underground, notably playing with The Dream Syndicate. After one EP and one full length album Kendra Smith was replaced by Hope Sandoval. David and Hope soon change the name of the band to Mazzy Star in 1989.
Roback wrote and produced the songs that actress Maggie Cheung sang in the 2004 movie Clean.
