David Nelson (musician)

David Nelson is an American musician. Nelson, a guitarist, was an original member of the New Riders of the Purple Sage and, since 1994, performs with the David Nelson Band.

David Nelson's first band, The Wildwood Boys included Jerry Garcia and Robert Hunter who became integral parts of the band The Grateful Dead , lead guitarist and songwriter. Nelson performed on three notable Grateful Dead records including Aoxomoxoa, American Beauty (album), and Workingman's Dead.

David Nelson also was the lead singer when Garcia, John Dawson, Nelson New Riders of the Purple Sage, in 1969, recorded their countercultural anthem, "Panama Red,". In the mid-'80s, Nelson also performed as a member of the Jerry Garcia Acoustic Band.
