David L. Armstrong

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

David L. Armstrong (born August 6, 1941 in Hope, Arkansas) was mayor of Louisville, Kentucky from 1999 to 2003. Prior to this he had served as Jefferson County Judge/Executive since 1989. He was raised in Madison, Indiana and earned a J.D. from the University of Louisville school of law in 1969. After working in the public and private sector for some time, including a term as a family court judge, he was elected Attorney General of Kentucky in 1983, and ran unsuccessfully for Lieutenant Governor in 1987.

Because of city/county merger, Armstrong was technically the final mayor of the City of Louisville. His term was marked by several controversies, most notably his firing of the police chief. He also had several successes, with the creation of Louisville Extreme Park and his emphasis on revitalizing Downtown Louisville.
