David Bale

David Bale (September 2, 1941 – December 30, 2003) was a pilot and entrepreneur, best known as an environmentalist, and animal rights activist. His son Christian Bale is an actor.
He was born in South Africa and grew up in England, Egypt and the Channel Islands. In 1991, he moved with his two younger children, Christian and Louise, to Los Angeles where they could continue their careers in film and theater. There he soon became involved in animal rights and environmental issues. He served as a board member of The Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund and supported the Ark Trust.
On September 3, 2000, he married the feminist writer Gloria Steinem. He died of brain lymphoma on December 30, 2003, at the age of 62.
